Rising signs: Removing the Mask

rising signs: removing the mask

Rising sign? Is that the sign that indicates what time I'm likely to get up in the morning?' Er, you're not far off actually, but it's a little bit more complex than that. So below I've outlined what is meant by the term 'Rising Sign' or 'Ascendant' as it's also referred to (by people who like to use bigger words).
To get to the point, your Rising Sign or Ascendant is the Zodiac sign that was rising or ascending on the Eastern horizon at the moment you took your first breath in this world. It is therefore important I make clear at this stage that, to accurately determine your Rising Sign, you need to know your exact time of birth. Without this information, it can be a guessing game, I'm afraid.

Horoscope wheels can look like complicated things but I assure you they aren't. If you look at a horoscope wheel, your Rising Sign is located at the nine o'clock position of the chart and is also referred to as your 'First House'. From there, all other Houses are numbered counterclockwise, two through twelve. Some will have planets in them, others might not. It doesn't matter if some of your houses are empty but it does matter what your Rising Sign is because, from there, we can determine which signs occupy which houses in your chart.

does knowing my rising sign increase the accuracy of horoscopes?

It is important to know your Rising Sign in order to read horoscopes correctly. If someone read their horoscope in a newspaper or magazine and it said something like 'Mercury has just moved into Libra, your tenth house of career ambitions', this would be totally inaccurate if their Rising Sign is, for example, Aries. If Mercury had just moved into Libra, then counting ten signs from (and including) Aries...Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn....takes us to Capricorn. Therefore, Capricorn is that person's tenth house, and Libra is their seventh house. Mercury is affecting their house of partnerships and matrimonial affairs, not career ambitions! See how confusing and inaccurate it can be?

so how do rising signs appear?

As the Earth turns, the Rising Sign moves up from the eastern horizon at one degree every four minutes. Therefore, the exact degree of the Rising Sign on the horizon is constantly changing over the course of a few minutes. When the 30th degree has risen after about a two hour period, a new Zodiac sign appears on the eastern horizon and becomes the new Rising Sign.

so what exactly is a rising sign?

Elsewhere within this website, I've talked about Sun Signs, Moon Signs and Venus Signs. To understand how your Rising Sign fits into the scheme of things, think of your Sun Sign as your soul; your inner personality and all you're capable of achieving. Think of your Moon Sign representing all that motivates you emotionally; your core being, the heart of who you reall are. Your Rising Sign therefore represents how you present yourself to the world, wish to be seen by others, the 'mask' you wear. The word 'mask' refers specifically to aspects of your personality you would prefer others didn't know about as opposed to relating to phoniness or insincerity. Your Rising Sign can exert an influence almost as powerful as your Sun and Moon Signs.
